LA LUZ TRAIL REPORT--Winter/ Spring 2008
Date of report: April 18, 2008
La Luz trailhead to Chimney Canyon Spring (8200ft): Clear of snow.
Chimney Canyon Spring to La Cueva Overlook (8900ft): Clear of snow
La Cueva Overlook to 5 mile sign (9000ft): Clear of snow
5 mile sign to junction with Crest Spur trail (10100ft): This upper La Cueva section of La Luz trail is now a mix of snow-free trail and deep drifts. Crossing these drifts, especially when the snow is frozen, requires poles and/or ice walking equipment. The drifts may be as deep as 4 to 5 feet and will probably last well into May.
Crest Spur trail to Sandia Crest (10,678 ft.) or La Luz trail to Tram: These upper trails are almost snow-free. The few remaining drifts do not present significant hiking problems and will soon disappear with warm weather.
